Choosing an AlignmentOne way of deciding upon an alignment is to consider your characters viewpoint on morality and ethics, using the following method.
Focus - the concern or goal in question; polarized concepts. Medium - the means of accomplishing the focus; polarized concepts. Arbitrator - essentially a tie breaker which may be positive, negative, or neutral.
MoralityBeneficence, Nonmaleficence, Justice
Good (Beneficence for its own sake.) Neutral (Doing good for the rewards offered.) Neutral (Misdeeds intended for the benefit of others.) Evil (Maleficence driven by self-interest.)
If ones methods of accomplishing the focus are overall just, adjust toward Good. If ones methods of accomplishing the focus are particularly unjust, adjust toward Evil.
EthicalityLiberty, Order, Trust
Law (Belief that order arises through strict discipline.) Neutral (Belief that freedom can be attained through the channels of law.) Neutral (Belief that obligations can be fulfilled without neccesity of governmental action.) Chaos (Belief that the law cannot deliver liberty.)
If ones methods of accomplishing the focus are overall noble, adjust toward Law. If ones methods of accomplishing the focus are particularly dishonorable, adjust toward Chaos.
