Ranks in the Priesthood

  • Archcanon - The head of the church of a deity, referred to as the mouth of that god upon Heroshi.
  • Canon/High Priest - The head of the church within a region.
  • Vicar - The head of a chuch within a particular settlement.
  • Curate - Servants of a church who work below the Vicar.
  • Acolyte- Initiate rank.

Western Religion

The people of the west generally have a high regard for the gods. Even the smallest villages has at least a humble shrine to the local patron deity. Larger settlements may have have many shrines and a number of temples. The head of an individual temple is a vicar, who is led by the region's canon (high priest). The archcanon is considered the elected "mouth" of the deity on Heroshi and imparts doctrine to the canons of the deity the world over. Curates are the lowest level of clergy that operate in the church.

Eastern Religion

The people of the east do not worship the gods. The only deity they revere is Venari, but do not practice religion centered on her (no temples). Easterners honor ancestors and spirits. The great spirits are the Azure Dragon of the East, Meng Zhang; the Vermilion Bird of the North is Ling Guang; White Tiger of the West, Jian Bing; and the Black Tortoise of the South, Zhi Ming.

Theurgy
A trend has arisen of people dedicating themselves not to gods, but the power behind the gods. Their maxim: Ludus Narro Discidia outlines their precepts of entertainment, storytelling, and tension. They see the world as a series of beginnings, journeys, and resolutions, a tale of souls and swords eternally retold. Most people are uncertain what to make of Theurgists and whether they mean good or ill. Some think they serve force of destruction, while others suspect the overdeity. This ethos is attractive to bards especially.

Death and Beyond

When a person dies in Heroshi, their soul departs and enters the ethereal plane. There, the soul has a choice: a.) dwell in the ethereal plane (perhaps expecting prompt resurrection) or b.) submit ones soul to judgment by Atrophus. Those judged by Atrophus are evaluated by their deeds and sent to the appropriate plane for their afterlife. Those who have been benevolent are sent to Erhad to join with Solarion or explore its various planets. Those whose deeds are judged evil are sent to Nuegalon, where their soul will join with Kal'nuega, and either participate in a merciless struggle for supremacy, or be tormented for ones weakness. Those who are judged to have not been strongly dedicated to good or evil are returned to the material plane, reincarnated into another form. Souls are generally content or at least resigned to their judgement, even if it was not what they expected. It's thought this is due to the spirit lacking the self-delusion of material being.

Resurrection

A person can be raised from the dead by rejoining their soul to their original body. As long as their soul hasn't been absorbed into another being (celestial, fiendish, or elemental) a person can be restored to life. This is achieved through the channeling of positive energy, though the use of this power is not intrinsically good or evil, but rather depends on how it is used.

Undead

Necromancy works by taking the substance of souls that makes up Kalnuega and places it in a corpse to animate it. I don't need to tell you that's evil. Intelligent undead such as vampires and liches retain the mind of the departed, or more accurately, a copy. Hence, they have the same personality and intellect, but no morality. Mori are a type of undead that may be animated by either positive or negative energy.
