"Adventuring is usually easier if the group includes a Leader, a Defender, a Striker, and a Controller, but none of the four roles is absolutely essential. Groups that double or triple up on one role while leaving other roles empty are going to face different challenges. They’ll also have different strengths. That’s the type of experiment you’ll be running in eight months." from this article. Sounds familiar... somewhat like in 3E where it says CRs are computed with the assumtion of a party composed of one fighter, one cleric, one rogue, and one wizard (citation?). Clearly the CR system breaks down if you have anything other than that, and taking into account environment, enemy strategy, and magic items things really get hairy. This is why I award xp Ad Hoc. How much do undead and constructs screw over rogues? How much easier do clerics have it against undead? Will 4E take these into account? Time will tell if history repeats itself in these experiments.

"...one of the new key conceits about the D&D world is simply this: Civilized folk live in small, isolated points of light scattered across a big, dark, dangerous world." from this article on the wizards site.
I have to wonder what affect this will have, developing 4E with this conceit which is contrary to the way things are done in my own campaign world and all the good ones I've played in. Heroshi has its share of monster-haunted wilderness, but most of it is, in fact, carved up between nation-states that jealously enforce their borders. It's sounding more like they're
selling Final Fantasy than Middle Earth. What does this indicate to me? More random encounters! It'll be like Diablo [which I never finished] all over again!

So now that 4th edition is announced and for as long as D&D Insider is free, I'll have my free account under the username Shadowsnipe. Haven't played with it much, but it'd be good to make initial networking contact with each other via usernames. If you have one / make one edit this and add your account name.
Will - Shadowsnipe
Adam - Axcalibar
